Down the River is a musical revue inspired by the Punjabi folktale Sohni Mahiwal. Two lovers, separated from each other by familial disapproval and a dangerous river, make every effort to be together. But as the river grows violent and people become suspicious of their connection, can their love be enough to save them?

Down The River is the annual back-to-school revue presented by Cabaret Theatre and The Livingston Theatre Company.

Since 1975, Cabaret Theatre has been committed to providing opportunities for Rutgers University students to learn about all aspects of theatre, including acting, directing, choreographing, designing, writing, technical work, marketing, and more. Cabaret also prides itself on providing the Rutgers and New Brunswick community with affordable, high-quality theatrical productions throughout the school year.

Cabaret presents four Main Stage productions each year, including both straight plays and musicals, in addition to its various special events in both semesters, such as the Back-to-School Revue, Directors' Showcase, the Original Play Festival, and Rutgers Night Live. All Rutgers undergraduate students are encouraged to get involved in any of these productions through applications and auditions.
