CALL FOR DIRECTORS: The 2015 Directors' Showcase!
Hello All,
DO YOU WANT TO DIRECT A SHOW?! Are you saying you can't possibly do so because you have no directing experience? WELL LUCKY YOU! This year's Directors' Showcase is right around the corner!
Just hearing about this event now?
As some of you may know, we do an event at Cabaret called Directors Showcase, it is an event where 5-6 new directors get to direct short 10 minute plays in order to gain some directing experience as well as Cabaret experience. I have attached the application-to-direct form and a few of the short plays we have included in case you don't have an idea of a play to propose. If you have a short play in mind that you want to direct, please include it in your proposal so we can read it: make sure it has at least 2 characters [max 8] and has a running time of 10-20 minutes.
If you have any questions about the process/application or want to hear more about the showcase, you can email me at artistic.cabarettheatre@gmail.com!
The application is due September 16th at 11:59pm! If you feel stressed for time, but still want to apply to direct, please email artistic.cabarettheatre@gmail.com so we can discuss your options!
Happy Proposing!

CALL TO AUDITION: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
Who's ready to join us in our first main stage production of our 40th anniversary season? I know YOU, yes YOU, are! So once you have settled yourself in on campus, come on over to Cabaret Theatre and audition for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, directed by Cody Beltis!
ABOUT THE SHOW:
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is an absurdist tragicomedy by Tom Stoppard that develops two minor characters from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The play follows the two courtiers on their farcical misadventures, while also including scenes directly from Hamlet in which R & G are included. But they express their confusion about the series of events- the ones that occur in Hamlet- in which they are not present. They meet a troupe of Players, are commissioned by the Danish Royalty, and end up on a boat to England in an attempt to have Hamlet murdered. The play is often described as the inverse of Hamlet.
SHOW DATES:
October 29th-November 1st
PRODUCTION STAFF:
Director: Cody Beltis
Assistant Director: Kelly Lozo
Stage Manager: Dominick Scalera
Assistant Stage Manager: Thomas James Ellis

-Your RUID number
Auditions are opened to part-time and full-time Rutgers undergraduate students
CHARACTERS:
ROSENCRANTZ and GUILDENSTERN: A pair of schoolmates who are childhood friends of Prince Hamlet. They frequently forget who they are. Rosencrantz is less of a thinker, and takes things at face value, while Guildenstern tends to think about the consequences of an action.
THE PLAYER: A traveling actor with plenty of wit. He is the leader of a troupe of players. He likes melodramatic theatre containing love, sex, blood, and torture. He often looks for the player Alfred, with whom he may have a relationship behind the scenes.
HAMLET: The Prince of Denmark. He displays a quirkiness and madness, as is evident in Hamlet.
KING CLAUDIUS: The King of Denmark, uncle and stepfather to Hamlet. He sends for R &G to find out what afflicts Hamlet, and then sends the three to England, attempting to have R&G deliver a letter to the English royalty requesting Hamlet’s murder.
GERTRUDE: The Queen of Denmark, Hamlet’s mother. Mixes up R&G here and there. She displays concern for Hamlet, but also affection for her newly wedded husband.
POLONIUS: The King’s chief advisor. A man of high class and status. He sees through much of Hamlet’s lies, but doesn’t care enough to take action.
OPHELIA: Polonius’ daughter and Hamlet’s love interest. She drifts in and out of scenes, but her death is not mentioned.
HORATIO: Hamlet’s best friend

Involvement Opportunities Galore!
Bad News: There are only 21 days left before classes start :(
Good News: We have a few announcements that will make you look forward to coming back to campus! And if you are a freshman/incoming student, this is another chance for you to get involved in student theatre at Rutgers University!
We have the Back-to-School Revue with our awesome friends at The Livingston Theatre Company happening from September 4th-September 6th. We're going to have a build day set for Sunday, August 23rd at 3:00pm at Cabaret Theatre. An event page for the Revue and the build will be posted by the end of the week.
Also happening on August 23rd is our last round of cleaning up Cabaret Theatre! This will be happening from 12:00pm until 5:00pm. You do not need to stay the entire time nor do you have to be a Rutgers student to attend a clean up (so feel free to bring friends, family members, former roommates, current roommates, floormates, frenemies, etc.) Information regarding the clean up can be found on the Facebook event page.
We also have auditions for Rutgers Night Live XI happening August 27th-28th at Cabaret Theatre! RNL is the sketch-comedy group within Cabaret Theatre that performs once every semester. If you like comedy and enjoy performing and/or writing skits, or if this sounds like something you would love to be involved in, come out and audition! Information regarding auditions can be found on the Facebook event page.
And that's it for now! It's always a bummer when summer is about to end (hehe rhyme hehehe), but we are so excited for the awesome things that are in stored for Cabaret Theatre this year. And we want to hear from you! Tweet us at @RutgersCabaret with what your most excited to see/do at Cabaret Theatre!
