Introducing Cabaret Theatre's 2017-2018 Season

"From ordinary comes extraordinary."

Cabaret Theatre is proud to present a compelling, exciting 2017-2018 Season that exemplifies the power a black box theater’s space possesses to transform, transport, and transcend. In every show Cabaret has produced in its forty-one years to date, the audience and the performers are taken on a journey that moves and intrigues them; we are proud to continue that legacy in our upcoming season. Furthermore, we aimed to expand on this goal by telling four stories that encapsulate in their scenes and in their songs the potential in the commonplace and the possibilities in the everyday. In essence, Cabaret’s 42nd Season is our love letter to our black box space and the extraordinary things that can come out of our ordinary home.

PETER AND THE STARCATCHER
Directed by Maya Mitterhoff

Based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, Peter and the Starcatcher tells the story of how a young orphan came to be the famous boy who wouldn't grow up. As Peter embarks on his life-changing journey, he is faced with greedy pirates, jungle tyrants, singing mermaids, and a very special little girl named Molly, who shows Peter the importance of perseverance, hope, and love. Told by a dozen actors portraying over 100 unforgettable characters, Peter and the Starcatcher reminds us of what it was like to truly believe in magic and helps us find that magic within ourselves once more.

ORDINARY DAYS
Directed by David Novis

Set in present-day New York, Adam Gwon's 90-minute musical, Ordinary Days, explores just how intertwined our lives truly are. Despite their individual stories, our four characters prove how, ultimately, we're all sharing in the same experience. Funny, heartfelt, and, above all, intimate, this show disproves the notion that our lives are anything but alone, anything but insignificant - anything but ordinary.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS
Directed by Krystina Matos

A stirring play by Neil LaBute, this drama explores what we give up for love, what we risk for art, and how similar these two things can be. Centered around a young student, his dynamic relationship with a captivating graduate art student, and his best friends’ turbulent engagement, this play is a curious study into modern-day relationships and all the beauty and ugliness that comes with them. In under two hours and with just four characters, LaBute’s script directly tackles and challenges societal perceptions of ethics, art, humanity, and power. “Natural, beautiful, and malleable,” The Shape of Things leaves us with no definite answers, but instead with a myriad of gripping questions.

PIPPIN
Directed by Ajit J. Mathews

With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked) and a book by Roger O. Hirson, Pippin tells the profoundly human story of a man as he strives to rise above the mundane and to achieve something exceptional. Schwartz’s timeless pop-tinged music underscores and heightens Pippin’s journey through war, sex, politics, and love, ushered along by a mysterious but encouraging troupe of players. Deceptively lighthearted at face value, the musical’s tone quickly shifts and ultimately challenges the audience with one question: how far are you willing to go to be extraordinary?
